Tiling Texture

Original Image

Assignment Overview

The purpose of the Tiling Texture assignment was to learn how to make texture that can be usable in a game engine.

Process of Creation in Photoshop

Images for this assignment needed to have subtle shadows and had to be shot with the camera pointed straight down at a ground area. The canvas size needs to be 1024 x 1024 for this image to upload correctly as a ground map in a game engine. The original image will be cropped down to this size with no extra parts of the image being outside the canvas. After this, in the "Filter" tab under "Other," there is an option called "Offset." The image needs to be fixed so that it looks natural after this, so the main method is to use the spot healing and stamp tools to make it look like a natural ground that can be repeated.

Other Issues

The most difficult part of creating a repeating texture is how the edges of the image blend together when placed next to one another.
To fix this, I got rid of any large rocks and patches of dirt by the edges and used the stamp and lasso tools to replace them with grass. After those adjustments, the image blends together relatively well when placed by a copy of itself on a repeating texture map. Even though there may be too many rocks in this image and it may look too unreal when repeated across a large area, it will work as a basic ground texture.

Hyperrealism

Assignment Overview

The Hyperreal assignment consisted of creating a surreal image from the imagination by utilizing and combining multiple pictures into a single image. The final picture would be successful in maintaining a reasonable amount of realism and it would control what the viewer sees.

Process of Composition

The process of thought for this image was that I figured that mountains are brown-ish and so is chocolate. I also thought it would be interesting to experiment with the idea of something that is impossible to break apart is suddenly being split in half as easily as chocolate. The caramel being spilt also creates a strange feeling of contrast between the non-motion of the mountain and the potential motion of something oozing down it. In a way, it could almost seem natural since we are used to water or snow running down mountains. I especially favored the image that I used as the background because it clearly establishes the middle ground of the image by the houses being there. It also makes the image look alive with civilization, which also grounds the viewer and makes the image more impossible.

Other Issues

The most difficult part of this project was the lighting. The weather for my background image had to be perfect and sunny, which it had not been for most of the week of the assignment. I was also upset to see that the external image did not have the same lighting at all and appeared glossy and too vibrant compared to the image below it. When stitching the image together, I was frustrated at how badly the chocolate bits were blending and I always had the feeling that something just did not look right about the whole image. The background image is also vastly more affected by atmospheric perspective, let alone being far away, so that might have been an issue as well.
How I fixed this was made the chocolate have shadows that were more harsh, as the mountains' shadows are, and created a curves adjustment so that the chocolate would appear less vibrant. This blended the two images more successfully than before. I also added more of the external chocolate images on the edges of the image so that the picture would feel more grounded. This proved to help blend the two images together and I was more satisfied with the image.

Portrait

Original Image

Assignment Overview

The purpose of the Portrait exercise was teach us how to create perfect compositions of people's portraits including what kind of lighting is involved in portrait taking and how to edit the picture using Photoshop tools and techniques.

Process of Photoshop Editing

The image for portrait photography needs to be sufficiently lighted from light from above and light coming from the front. The reason for more than one light source is so that there are not too harsh of shadows present on the face and hair and all of the features are visible. After this, Photoshop has the ability to fix any discrepancies that are usually considered unfavorable. This can include wrinkles or blemishes. The desired effect, as well as the original image being untouched, can be accomplished by a combination of layer filters and the spot healing tool. Create a high frequency and low frequency layer by making two copies of the original image. Low frequency is created from the Gaussian Blur edit on the first copy. High frequency is created from the Apply Image Option on the second copy. Change the high frequency layer to Linear Light, and use the spot healing tool on the high frequency layer to fix the discrepancies. This makes it so that the image preserves color while being able to use the spot healing brush more effectively.

How I Would Have Composed The Images

How I would have taken these images would be have someone I know, maybe of a bit of an older age, to stand against a wall and take the picture with the camera in a vertical orientation. I would set up more lights so that the shadow would not be too harsh, or I would just use flash. After that, in Photoshop I would go through the process of creating high and low frequency layers and then use the spot healing brush to fix any blemishes or wrinkles that they might have. The finished product would end up making the person look younger or appear to have very clear skin compared to the original picture.

Panorama

Original Images

Assignment Overview

The purpose of the Panorama exercise was to learn how to stitch together multiple pictures in Photoshop while making it as seamless and fluid as possible.

Process of Photoshop Editing

Layer masks are key to making the images look seamless. By drawing on the layer masks, it can create a gradual transition from one image to the next without damaging the original images. Tools such as spot healing tools or stamp tools are permanent and cannot be hidden or revealed because they are unable to be used on layers that are separate from the original images. The edges of the image were also refined by merging all of the layers from a copy of the work and using the stamp and spot healing tools to refine only the edges, in order for the image to fit the rectangle canvas size.

How I Would Have Composed The Images

To take these pictures, I need a tripod to rotate the camera on so that the image can be put together. I would choose an area with lots of buildings at a high up place so that few people would be seen in the final images, because people would move around too much. The ideal time of day to take the image would be at dusk, because that is a really neat time of day that is full of interesting colors. After taking the images, I would put the photos into Photoshop and use layer masks and the methods above to blend them together into one panorama image.

HDRI

HDRI Image

Assignment Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to create an HDR image using three varying exposures blended together through Adobe Lightroom Classic. HDRI stands for High Dynamic Range Imagery and This method of editing images is most commonly used in photo industries such as real estate.

Process of Composition

Out of all of my pictures, this image looked the most appealing to me. The focus for this composition is the infamous O'Connell building on campus. To attempt to frame the focus better, I used the plants in front of the building. The building is also the biggest subject in the image, and the trees and electric post in the background create a more balanced look than if there were nothing in the background at all. This further strengthens the focus.

Other Issues

Since I could not figure out how to make the camera automatically take three photos at once, I had to hold the camera as steady as possible while changing the aperture wheel on the top of the camera. Between the photos, there would also be people or things that changed drastically when I was changing aperture. I was saved, however, that the HDRI program in Lightroom that covered up the movement distractions. Other than that, there was random person that I accidentally captured in this photo that I think the composition could do without.

Things

Original Image

Assignment Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to photograph every-day visuals or items in some sort of interesting way.

Process of Composition

When finding the right shots, I took a variety of images ranging from chairs in a cafeteria, to nature shots, to pictures of pipes around the school, to brick walls with different lighting. However, out of all the pictures of shots that I tried to make look interesting, the one that I found most appealing was a simple upward picture of a blossom tree (the one seen above obviously). Students walk under and around this tree every day, and aside from maybe sticking gum on it, they usually do not give a second thought to it. Taking this picture, I noticed some hidden natural elements of composition.

Nature has an interesting motif of patterns and pleasing visuals. The Golden Rectangle is said to be the most pleasing shape, and it is often found in nature. Inside the rectangle, there can fit a complicated spiral that is very pleasing to the viewer's eye. It is most commonly associated with seashells and shapes of the human face. It is most effective in compositions because it can lead the eye in a spiral fashion all around your image, so that the viewer is gradually lead to the most important parts the image. In this picture, the camera perfectly captured a spiral-like shape going up the tree into the branches. It also is framed to capture the spiral movement very well.

The focus of my image is the bark sticking out in the front. I made this the focus because I want the viewer to see the complexities of the bark and lead the eye tree as a whole. The image is made to make you feel small and distant from the top of the tree, and very close to the piece of bark in front of you. I also edited the image so that it gives it a warmer feel.

Other Issues

I think that my editing was a bit over the top. The image looks great the way it is, and I would only change the lighting maybe a bit. I think I was trying to make it look like a movie scene, but that would be pointless because it acts more like an art piece rather than a scene in a movie. Other than that, this is one of the best composed images that I took.

On the Edge

Edited Image

Original Image

Overview of Assignment

In this assignment, we were tasked with taking a picture that draws the viewer's eye to the edge of the photo. The subject had to be touching or very close to the edge of the photo.

Process of Composition

To draw the viewer's eye in a pleasing way, I utilized the way that the human eye is naturally drawn to animals and other people. A cat in the window frames the picture so that the eye will defiantly look into the window and at the subject, which is the cat. As seen in the original picture above, the subject appears to be darkened and in the shadows. While this may be appealing for a mysterious image, the bright wall on the opposite edge of the picture is much too distracting. To counteract this, I edited the image to be black and white. This is to take detail out of the ugly brick wall. Next, I used the dodge and burn tool in Photoshop to make the image more equal in terms of lighting up only the cat in the image, and dulling the wall a little. I did not make the wall completely dark because I was trying to use the principle of the Rule of Thirds, or making the image as even as possible on either side. While it is not a perfect Rule of Thirds image, it does appear somewhat balanced. The curtain next to the cat also provides variety and is not too distracting.

Other Issues

A big problem for this image is that getting to take a picture of a living creature is very difficult. The cat kept moving around, and I was sincerely worried about getting a blurry or corrupted image. Another issue is that I wish I were level to the window. I think I could get a better angle of the cat and a more appealing frame if I were level to it. However, it is very hard to take pictures of someone's window without someone seeing and getting upset. I think when I was pointing my camera up at the window, someone yelled something to me from the other windows. I didn't stay long to take many more pictures of the cat.
